Frequently Asked Questions

Radon questions, answered straight.

Everything Windsor-Essex homeowners actually ask us — what radon is, how to test, how mitigation works, and what it costs in 2026.

Radon basics

What radon is, why it matters, and how it gets into Windsor-Essex homes.

  • Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced when uranium in soil and bedrock decays. It is colourless, odourless, and tasteless — the only way to know your level is to test. Health Canada identifies radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canada (after smoking), linked to roughly 3,200 deaths each year.

Testing & detection

How to find out your home's radon level — DIY kits, detectors and pro tests.

  • A radon detector measures airborne radon concentration. Two main types: passive detectors (alpha-track or activated charcoal) that you deploy for 91+ days then mail to a lab, and active continuous radon monitors (CRMs) that report hourly. Health Canada recommends a long-term test of at least 3 months, ideally during the heating season (October–April).

Radon mitigation systems

How professional mitigation works and what to expect from a system.

  • A radon mitigation system is permanent equipment installed in a home to reduce indoor radon to a safe level. The most common design — active soil depressurization (ASD) — runs a sealed PVC pipe from beneath the basement slab up through the building and out above the roofline, with a continuously running inline fan that pulls soil gas out before it reaches living space. Properly designed systems routinely cut radon by 80–99%.

Cost & companies

What radon work actually costs in Windsor-Essex, and how to choose a contractor.

  • In Windsor-Essex and Southern Ontario, a typical residential mitigation system costs $2,300–$3,800 installed. The range depends on foundation type (poured slab vs. block vs. crawlspace), pipe routing, fan size, and whether the run is interior or exterior. Complex homes (multiple slabs, additions, deep crawlspaces) can run $4,500–$6,000+.
